What to Expect From Your Security Integrator: From Installer to Strategic Partner

Strategic security integrator

Many managers I talk to think of their security company the same way they think of a plumber. After they set up the system, you only call them when something breaks. They show up, and they fix it. That model made sense in 1999 when a camera was just a camera. It doesn’t hold up anymore.

Today, your video surveillance systems, access control systems, fire alarms, and computer networking infrastructure are all connected on the same network. Since they talk to each other, a firmware update on one device can knock another offline.

A misconfigured access point can leave a blind spot you won’t notice until something goes wrong. And when something goes wrong at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday, you don’t want to be calling around for someone who vaguely remembers installing your system two years ago.

That’s the difference between a vendor and a partner. A vendor sells you equipment, while a strategic partner stays in the picture.

Why the “Install And Vanish” Approach is a Problem

The way it usually works is a company wins the bid and helps you choose your equipment. Someone from their team installs the cameras and card readers.

You go on with your work and don’t talk with them again until you call with a complaint. The system works fine until it doesn’t. Maybe a camera stops recording, or maybe your network has grown, and the original setup just can’t handle the increased traffic.

These aren’t rare edge cases. ITIC polled over 1,000 firms worldwide for their 2024 Hourly Cost of Downtime Survey. They found that the average cost of one hour of downtime now exceeds $300,000 for over 90% of mid-size and large enterprises. This isn’t counting litigation or regulatory penalties. For smaller operations, even a few hours of a broken access control system or offline surveillance can cause financial damage and liability.

The equipment itself isn’t usually the problem. It’s the lack of ongoing attention.

What a Strategic Security Partner Does for Your Organization

The American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) has been tracking whether security teams have made the shift from task managers to strategic partners. Their 2025 Security Trends research found that organizations that involve security in their broader strategy faced fewer major disruptions and responded to problems faster. The ones still stuck in a task-manager role were more often caught off guard.

In practice, here is how a partner would work. Instead of waiting for you to call because a camera went down, your integrator would run scheduled inspections. This way, they catch and fix issues before a vulnerability is exploited.

Imagine you’re a facilities director at a manufacturing plant outside Pittsburgh. Your access control system has been running fine for three years. You have no reason to think about it. Then one morning, no one can badge in because a software update failed overnight and locked everyone out of the system. Production stops. Payroll is running. Nothing is moving. The cost of that morning isn’t just the service call to fix it. It’s lost production, overtime to recover, and whatever your team couldn’t do.

A partner with a maintenance program in place would have caught that update conflict before the shift started.

The Stakes Are Higher In Some Industries Than Others

When it comes to high stakes fields, healthcare is a great example. The American Hospital Association reported that healthcare had the highest combined total of ransomware and data theft attacks of any U.S. critical infrastructure sector in 2024, with 444 reported incidents.

IBM’s 2025 Cost of a Data Breach Report put the average healthcare breach at $7.42 million. It’s been the highest of any industry for over a decade. In comparison, IBM’s 2024 report found industrial manufacturing averaged $5.56 million per breach.

The consequences of a compromised system can reach far beyond a single organization. The AHA reported that when Change Healthcare was hit by a ransomware attack it affected thousands of hospitals and providers nationwide. The damage was due to halted pharmacy operations, delayed medical billing, and disrupted patient care. UnitedHealth Group reported the attack cost $872 million in its first quarter alone, not including long-term recovery costs.

For a hospital administrator, an integrated security system that goes offline or gets compromised isn’t just a facilities problem. It’s a patient safety issue, a compliance issue, and potentially a HIPAA violation in the same breath.

The same applies to a school district managing multiple buildings or a manufacturer with rotating shift workers on a 24-hour cycle. These environments need someone who understands the full picture, not just the hardware spec sheet.

Your Computer Network is Where Many Don’t Think of Looking

One of the areas that tends to get overlooked is computer networking. Some managers think of it as an IT issue instead of a security issue. These days that line doesn’t exist.

Your cameras run on your network and your card readers communicate through it. If your network is slow, misconfigured, or overloaded, then your video surveillance systems drop frames or stop recording. Your access control systems may even stop connecting.

A good security integrator doesn’t just wire things together and walk away. They design the network around your security systems. Every device running on it has what it needs to work.

When all of those systems sit on a well-designed and well-maintained network, they work as an integrated security system. When they’re treated as separate installs with separate contractors, gaps appear. And those gaps are expensive.

What to Look for in an Integrated Security Systems Partner

Not every security company offers the same level of maintenance support. When you’re evaluating who to work with, here are some questions worth asking:

  • Do they offer a structured maintenance program, or is everything billed as a service call?
  • Do they proactively reach out to schedule inspections, or do you always have to call them?
  • Will they update you when your equipment is aging out or when a manufacturer pushes a critical update?
  • Can they see your full system and how each piece connects to the others, or are they only responsible for their portion of the install?

The answers tell you a lot about whether you’re buying equipment or buying a relationship.

Pittsburgh businesses aren’t operating in a low-risk environment. The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police recorded 7,232 property crimes in the city in 2024. That’s real exposure for commercial properties, warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and office buildings across the region. A security system that hasn’t been touched since installation isn’t doing that job.

A Strategic Security Partner Built For the Long Haul

A maintenance program adds a line to your budget. What it removes is the unpredictable cost of a system that fails when it matters most. 2 Krew Security and Surveillance has been working with commercial and institutional clients across Pittsburgh and Tri-State area since 2006.

Our maintenance programs are designed to keep your investment working for you, not just on the day it was installed. Annual and bi-annual inspection plans, 24/7 support, and a team that treats your security as something worth protecting year after year.

If your current setup has been running without a formal maintenance schedule, that’s worth a conversation. Reach out to 2 Krew to talk about how a strategic security partner can help keep your business secure.
